Good shots of the Maunsell 'U1' moguls rarely arrive here and two turned up in as many weeks. Here we see a storming runpast at Purley on 11/4/54 with no. 31906 in charge of the Down Newhaven Boat train relief which I might well have seen myself some 15 mintes previously as it passed under the footbridge at Norbury. The main train was always hauled by a Bulleid electric loco but the relief was awaited with palpable anticipation by the spotters on that bridge as one never kmew what would turn up. On one occasion it was a U1 piloting a Bulleid pacific and what a sight that was.
