Austerity & WD locomotives
This category covers the WW2 varieties of WD (War Department) engines of the 2-8-0, 2-10-0 and 0-6-0ST varieties. The saddle tanks became universally known as the successful J94 class which became a favourite not only of BR but also industry. They also, along with the tender locomotives, saw service in Europe with many J94's and 2-8-0's seeing service with NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) until the end of its steam operations early in 1958. My small number of negatives of the NS locos are included in this gallery partly to show off how an unattractive looking design can be made even more unattrractive.Read More
