LCGB: The South Western Limited 18/9/60
SECR Wainwright/Maunsell 'L' class 4-4-0 no. 31768 awaits departure from Ascot having taken over haulage duties fro Drummond 'Black Motor' no. 30339 which had brought the tour train down from Ludgate Hill via a circuitous route. The 'L' class is forever known as 'Germans' because the second batch was built by Borsig of Berlin but this example from the original batch - delivered after the German batch so Chris Knowles-Thomas tells me - was built by Beyer Peacock in 1914. The Kent electrification decided the fate of most of this class and many were moved from the south eastern section to Nine Elms mpd as a result which this is where 31768 was allocated when this shot was taken. Withdrawal from Nine Elms came in December 1961..
