Maunsell 'L' class 4-4-0 no. 31776 at Brighton on 27/4/57. The 'L' class was built in 1914 and was commonly known amongst railway staf as 'Germans' because some of the class was contracted out to Borsig of Berlin as was this example although the actual construction was undertaken at Ashford works. Although 31776 spent most of its working life on eastern section metals it was allocated to Brighton from 3/56 until 3/59 when a further move was to Nine Elms where the end came in February 1961.
