SECR Wainwright 'D' class 4-4-0 no. 31501 had been withdrawn from service at Gillingham mpd in March 1953 and ended up being used as a stationary boiler at Ramsgate from March 1958 until early 1960. However, is there anything else known about 31501's whereabouts between the date of withdrawal and its intsallation as a stationary boiler at Ramsgate?
Note three of the common traits of stationary boilers - one driving wheel wheelset removed, the steam feed taken from the dome and a wooden cab extension with adjustable side and roof sheets to assist in the control of draughting.
