One would be hard pressed to find a finer shot of a hop pickers special than this example of Maunsell D1 class 4-4-0 no. 1736 taken in 1946. The train, comprising a birdcage six car set sandwiched between pairs of GUV's, has arrived via Redhill and is depicted accelerating through the middle Down road at Tonbridge station.
No. 1736 had been rebuilt from a Wainwright 'D' class at Ashford in 1927 and didn't fare well compared with most of the class being withdrawn at Ashford mpd in December 1950.
