The SECR Maunsell prototype E1 class 4-4-0 no. 179 was the only member of the class 'built' at Ashford and entered service in 1919. This shot, taken at Battersea shed, shows the loco with its SR 'A' prefix denoting 'Ashford'. Note that the SE&CR cabside plate is a reminder of the loco's origin. A179 became the second of the class to be withdrawn which occurred in December 1950.
