A route learning/inspection train for the electrification in the charge of Wainwright 'H' class 0-4-4T no. 31512 with a 73D Gillingham shed plate at the Dover end of Faversham station early in 1959.
From Chris Knowles-Thomas ....... the inspection saloon is DS1 of LSWR origin.  It was built in 1885 as a 46ft directors' saloon.  It got a replacement second hand underframe in 1950 from a LSWR 54ft composite which obviously needed shortening.  At the same time it was painted lined crimson.  It had prominent gas tanks on the roof which were removed in 1958 and it appears to be in this condition.  From then until 1961 it was used for route learning in connection with the Kent coast electrification
