LSWR Drummond designed 'Black Motor' 700 class 0-6-0 No. 309 was built by Dübs and Company in 1897 and entered service as No. 704 but receieved its more familiar number only a year or so later. This shot was taken at Reading's SR shed on 18/6/39. No. 309 like most of this class was a long-serving engine being withdrawn from service at Salisbury shed in 1962.
