In the backgrounbd of this shot is the LBSCR's Brighton Works where Stroudley D1 class 0-4-2T no. 361 Upperton had been built in January 1887. Upperton would live on to reach the ripe old age of 60 being withdrawn in April 1948 whilst allocated to Eastleigh shed.
A viewer has kindly sent this additional note: "The photo of Upperton is interesting in the fact that it is painted in a test variant of the Marsh umber livery. D.L.Bradley states that in May 1905 Marsh had Upperton painted umber with black bands lined on one side with a thin orange line, and on the other, a thin yellow line. I believe the photo of Upperton is in this condition and that the said orange line is on the outside of the black band whilst the yellow is on the inside. The lining has the reverse curve corners as used on the final Marsh umber livery.
