What a shame that this image isn't pin sharp at the front end of the loco. This shot, taken at Yarmouth (IoW) on 11/6/40, features Stroudley A1X Terrier 0-6-0T No. W8 Freshwater. W8 was originally LBSCR No. 46 Newington but was bought by the LSWR in 1903 and numbered 734 which was followed by sale to the Freshwater Yarmouth and Newport Railway (FYNR) in 1914 which applied the number 2 becoming W2 under SR ownership. The name was applied in 1928 and further renumbering as W8 came in 1932. W8 returned to the mainland in 1949 and was numbered 32646 in BR stock achieving minor fame as one of the regular Hayling Island branch's Terriers. Further fame ensued with display on a plinth outside the Hayling Billy public house and eventual transfer of ownership to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
