On February 20th 1960 Bulleid original Battle of Britain pacific no.34084 253 Squadron came a cropper when it failed to stop at the end of the Up Goods Loop at Hither Green and took a tumble down the embankment. This undated shot was taken a couple of days thereafter by which time the side sheeting had been removed and the packing, wooden sleepers, seems to be in place for the first attempt to roll it into the upright position. Although seemingly in dire straits no. 34084 was decreed to be only superficially damaged and returned to traffic following overhaul at Eastleigh in the April and went on to claim a minor triumph when it hauled the last Up weekday Atlantic Coast Express from Bude to Exeter on 14/8/64.
