Locomotive Preservation (Sussex) Ltd : The Marquess Goes South South West 12/3/67
The preserved Gresley K4 3442 The Great Marquess visited the Southern for a single railtour duty and is depicted here passing through Battersea Park station on the Down slow line. The tour had started at Victoria and travelled to this point via Crystal Palace to Brighton followed by the south coast line through to Southampton after which she went to Eastleigh for servicing. I ended up at Eastleigh and despite a sunny and fairly warm start to the day the weather that greeted us at Eastleigh was dull and bitterly cold with flurries of snow in the air.
On a personal note, four years after this shot was taken I was an employee in the building at the left edge of the picture.
