Ian Allan: Somerset & Dorset Special 25/4/54.
Fowler 2P class 4-4-0 no. 40601 waits at Bournemouth Central station, together with a considerable human presence, for Maunsell 'Schools' class 4-4-0 no. 30932 Blundells to arrive from servicing and be attached as the pilot engine for the arduous climb over the Menjdips to Bath Green Park. 30932 had brought this special from Waterloo and would later be the motive power for the return to London from Templecombe.
Note that the first vehicle in the train is a SECOND class brake saloon normally used for boat trains where three classes of travel remained available until the erstwhile third class universally became second in June 1956.
