Former NER, Wilson Wordell designed, steepleab, Bo-Bo electric locomotive no. 26500 looking very much as though it has just been repainted. 26500 is its BR number which was applied inMay 1948. 26500 was one of two members of this class and entered service with the NER in 1902. The class deignation of ES1 (ES = Electric Shunter)was assigned to them by the LNER in 1945 and carried forward into the nationalised era. 26500 was withdrawn in September 1964 and is still with us today at Shildon as part of the national collection. Her sister engine, 26501, was less fortunate and was scrapped in 1966.
Vic Smith has sent me the following: "26500 was released from a general overhaul at South Gosforth on 12 June 1961, carrying lined North Eastern green livery with NER & BR crests. This was its first overhaul since 1951."
