Captured as it is about to pass through Aycliffe station, Gresley A4 pacific no. 60005 Sir Charles Newton is in early BR guise with BRITISH RAILWAYS in full on the tender which dates this shot from July 1948 but prior to 21/10/51 when the signals were changed to upper quadrants. 60005 was a Gateshead engine when this shot was taken and remained there until she became one of the famed A4's that became the mainstay of express services north of Edinburgh with a move to St. Margaret's mpd in October 1963 and then to Ferryhill a month thereafter. Withdrawal was just around the corner in March 1964.
