LNER Gresley V2 2-6-2 no. 879 lays a blanket of smoke as she sets out southbound from bay platform no. 3 at Darlington Bank Top in 1947 and a viewer tells me that this is possibly an afternoon Darlington- Leeds via Ripon service. No. 879, a New England engine when this shot was taken, was BR branded in July 1949, moved to Great Central metals in June 1951 and then back to the NE at York in September 1959 followed by withdrawal in December 1962.
The light coloured vehicle in the background is worthy of note.
