Gresley LNER enhanced version of Holden's GER D16 class 4-4-0 no. 8898 in ex-works plain black livery at Stratford allegedly in 1947 although I think that this shot was taken a year or so earlier. The "NE" on the tender instead of LNER is a nice touch and I tink that if this was 1947 then the loco's number would be 2509, the 1946 one. No. 8898 was of 1900 vintage and would survive to be branded as BR no. 62509 in April 1948 whilst allocated to Stratford. Reallocation to Melton Constable came in January 1949 and then to Norwich in February 1952 where withdrawal symptoms set in at the end of the following September.
