A combination of LMSR and LNER motive power in the form of 'Royal Scot' 4-6-0 no. 46117 Welsh Guardsman and a named but unidentified Thompson B1 class 4-6-0 in charge of a service from either Leeds or Bradford to Blackpool depicted at Low Moor.
Ralph May, a fireman based at 56F Low Moor shed, sent this concise description of the location to Steam World for which our grateful thanks:
"The train is approaching Low Moor station on the Up Fast main line having just emerged from Bowling tunnel and is passing Low Moor No. 4 signal box which is obscured by the coaches. Behind the photographer and under the next footbridge is Low Moor shed whilst, just visible above the cab of the B1, is the water tank for the column in the Down loop. The double-heading means that there are more than 10 coaches and the extra power was needed to negotiate Burnley Bank and over the top at Copypit. I fired such trains as this from Bradford with combinations of Black Fives and Jubilees."
