LMSR Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 no. 4966 was built under the stewardship of Ivatt at Crewe works in August 1946. It was BR branded in October 1948 and spent much of its working life allocated to Saltley depot. Withdrawal of BR no. 44966 in September 1966 was at Shrewsbury mpd.
I was puzzled by the type of tender but a viewer has kindly informed that it is a cut down Stanier type, rebuilt as a self weighing one, so as to measure the efficency of the locos' under varying conditions and that he has seen photos of this into late BR days.
The location is interesting as well because it doesn't look like Crewe as stated on the accompanying sleeve but this question has now been answered by a knowledgeable viewer: "4966 is at Horwich works. Above the cab of the loco is the peel monument which overlooks Rivington and Horwich."
