The sleeve note for this negative states that this Cambrian Railways 2-4-0 no. 28 depicted at Barmouth in 1919 but beyond that I know nothing. Mike Watts informs me that the rolling stock, with the possible exception of the rearmost coach, is GWR which wasn't uncommon on the Cambrian coast line. An anonymous viewer has sent me the following reproduced here verbatim: "One of twelve 2-4-0s built by Sharp Stewart for the Cambrian or its constituents in 1863-5. 28 was one of the oldest and was originally named Mazeppa; it was rebuilt in 1893 and placed in surplus stock in 1906, but C.C. Green, _North Wales Branch Line Album_ (Ian Allan, 1983), p.17 shows it working the Mawddwy branch train c.1912. It was withdrawn at the end of 1920 so this photo shows it very near the end of its long life. Six locos of this type were taken over by the GWR (two of them having by then been converted to side tanks) but none survived to carry a GWR number. [Apart from Green's book, the loco details come from _The locomotives of the Great Western Railway, 10: Absorbed engines, 1922-1947_ (Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, 1966), pp.K59-61.] The train might be bound for Ruabon via Dolgelley, where the Cambrian and the GWR made an end-on junction and where a GWR engine would take over. Green's book shows on p.12 a similar loco heading a train of GWR stock between Barmouth and Dolgelley, c.1905, although the train looks a bit longer than this one."
