Pre-war Dutch steam locomotive - Vooroorlogse Nederlandse stoom locomotief
Known coloquially as one of the Grote Groenen (Big Greens), this is Beyer Peacock built double framed 2-4-0 no. 1439 of 1892 vintage and when this shot was taken at its home depot of Zwolle in August 1936 where it had been allocated since 16/5/36 it it still had a couple of years left in the tank so to speak. We are fortunate that a member of this class, no. 1326, has survived into the heritage era and is located at the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht.
Just visible at the left of shot is Neilson Reid built 4-4-2T no. 5405 which had only recently, in July, been allocated to Zwolle mpd.
