An Indian pre-partition shot of what is described as Bengal & Assam Railway diesel railcar no. 93 but the number on the front of the unit is 227 and I've been unable to find any reference to this type of unit on the web or in my books collection.
'Indian Locomotives: Part 1 - Broad Gauge 1851-1940' by Hugh Hughes, Continental Railway Circle 1990. Page 81 outlines a loco roster for the broad gauge North Western Railway and right at the end this lists 11 diesel-mechanical railcars. They were numbered 90 to 100 (which concurs with the number mentioned in the caption). They were built by Ganz in 1938 and rated at 210 hp. However, DMUs appear to have been rare in India and none of the other railways list anything similar
