South African steam railways - Cape Western sytem.
South African Railways class 3BR 4-8-2 No. 1484 at Paarden Eiland (Cape Town) - 14th December 1969. Built by the North British Locomotive Company (Glasgow) - under Atlas Works number 19688/1912 - with a Belpaire boiler (as class 3B), it had been fitted with an SAR standard type 2 boiler during the late 1930s. Initial duties for this small class of Hendrie-designed locomotives was on the upper section of the Natal mainline. Following electrification of that section, they would see a variety of service elsewhere before being transferred to the Western Cape for shunting and transfer work.
