South African Railways class 12AR 4-8-2 No. 1520 at Nelspruit (Eastern Transvaal) - 29th July 1967. First of the class, it had been built by the North British Locomotive Company (Glasgow) - under Queens Park works number 21738/1919 - as a Belpaire-boilered class 12A, designed for coal haulage on the Germiston-Witbank line. As with many others of this type, it was later reclassified, following rebuilding in May 1955 with the specially-designed boiler and extended smokebox that readily distinguishes this heavy freight locomotive.
