Gresley A4 pacific no. E22 Mallard in charge of the 08.30 Plymouth -Paddington service at Taunton on Tuesday 27th April 1948 . This was a pre-test run during the 1948 locomotive exchange trials. Mallard failed with an overheating main bearing at Savernake where it was removed into Savernake Low Level sidings. The train was worked forwards by 2-6-2T no. 4563 to Newbury where 4920 Dumbleton Hall worked the remainder of the journey to Paddington. Mallard eventually ran light to Reading shed later in the day and returned to Kings Cross the next day.
