This is the Hill variant of Holden's GER D14/D15 Claud Hamilton design of 4-4-0 which originated as far back as 1900. This example, no. 1785, is one of ten built in 1923 and is depicted here brand new at Stratford in July 1923 by which time Gresley was the incumbent CME for the LNER. Note that the earliest incarnation of the LNER livery included an ampersand in the company's initials but that was soon dropped. No. 1785 was designated as class D16 by the LNER and that class was known generically as 'Super Clauds'. At some time in the 1920's - I don't know when - 7000 was added to the loco's number. The 1946 LNER renumbering saw 8785 renumbered to 2616 followed by the addition of BR's '6' prefix in November 1948 whilst it was allocated to Norwich mpd. 62616 moved to 31A Cambridge in March 1952 and was withdrawn from service at that shed in February 1953.
