London & South Western Railway – LSWR - luggage labels of the earliest type printed before circa 1889. These are usually described as “the coloured labels” even though many are printed on white paper. It’s widely believed that the coloured paper was used to overcome illiteracy amongst railway personnel of the time which is a reasonable assumption as the coloured paper policy was abandoned as national literacy improved towards the end of the 19th century.
